Double sleeving is standard for most players today. Yet many people still do it incorrectly.
You might think putting a card into two sleeves is simple. However, it is in the details where it is decided whether your card will stay in perfect condition for years, or remain unnecessarily exposed to moisture, dust, and mechanical damage.
What is double sleeving and why should you do it
Double sleeving means using two layers of protection.
- Inner sleeve, often called Perfect Fit
- Outer standard sleeve
This combination significantly increases protection against moisture, dust, bent corners, and damage during shuffling. For players of games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon Trading Card Game, Riftbound, or Disney Lorcana, it is practically essential today, especially when playing with collectible and higher value cards.
The most common mistake in double sleeving
Most players insert the card into the inner sleeve in the same direction they later insert it into the outer sleeve. This means both openings face upward.
Some people also make a mistake already when choosing their sleeves. They select inner sleeves that do not fit tightly enough around the card. When attempting proper double sleeving, they encounter the issue of the card or inner sleeve slipping out, making the entire process frustrating.
At first glance, it may not seem like a major issue. However, in that moment the card is not fully protected. Moisture or dust can still get inside, and during intense gameplay the inner sleeve may start sliding upward.
The correct method is the opposite. The inner sleeve should be placed from the opposite direction of the outer sleeve. The opening of the inner sleeve should face downward. The outer sleeve is then applied from the top as usual. This creates a sealed protection system.
Why direction truly matters
It may sound like a small detail, but it is not. Incorrect sleeving can lead to issues such as:
- Dirt entering the sleeve
- Increased risk of moisture damage
- Possible loss of card value
Properly applied sleeves create a barrier that significantly extends the lifespan of your entire collection.

Which sleeves should you choose
Sleeve quality is just as important as proper technique. The inner sleeve should fit tightly around the card. The outer sleeve should have strong seams, stable edges, and consistent material thickness. That is exactly what Spell Ward delivers.
Cheap sleeves often cause excessive slipping, faster wear, and deformation during shuffling. If you are already investing time and money into your deck, it makes sense to invest in its protection as well.
Summary
Double sleeving is not just about two layers of plastic. It is about proper technique and choosing the right sleeves. A small change in direction and a high quality inner sleeve can significantly improve your card protection.
